In a bit of “we all saw this coming” news, 21 Jump Street star Channing Tatum has been cast as the X-Men’s Ragin’ Cajun, Gambit. X-Men Producer Lauren Shuler Donner showed interest in Tatum a few months back with Tatum himself confirming that he would love to play the role.
It was made official when Donner told Total Film “It’s Channing” during the red carpet premiere of X-Men: Days of Future Past. No word yet on whether his first appearance will be in a long rumored solo Gambit flick or whether he’ll show up in the already announce sequel to Days; X-Men: Apocalypse.
While this may be a dream role, this will also be an uphill battle. As “cool” as Gambit is, he is very much a character of his time in the 90’s. Shining too much light on him may do away with his mystique a bit. The last time Gambit appeared on screen in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, he was portrayed by Taylor Kitsch. Let’s just hope they don’t feel the need to make him the focus when he should be more of Jack Sparrow in the first Pirate of the Caribbean.
